The ‘type’ field

This is a mandatory field that specifies the data type. The type may be entered in either lowercase or uppercase.

This field should be entered first and then press the enter key while the cursor is still in this field. LINKZ will then automatically:
- set the code field if this data type is setup to use automatic numeric codes
- set a template for the date field, or set it to the current date, according to how this type is setup
- automatically load a template for the main text area if this is setup for the type

The ‘code’ field

This is a mandatory field that specifies a code or shortname for a data item. The code must be unique within the whole LINKZ database.

LINKZ can be setup so that a code is automatically assigned when the enter key is pressed after the data type is entered. The code assigned will be the item type followed by a numeric value. The next number to use for a given code type is specified in the LINKZ setup program.

The ‘name’ field

The name field contains a name for the data item. This name is displayed in the item list at the bottom of the screen.

For some data items it may be the full details (eg '10:00 dentist'). For others it will be a label (eg 'John Smith').

The ‘date’ field

The date field contains an optional date. The LINKZ setup program specifies whether a date applies to each data type, and if so, what default date format applies.

So that date sorting works correctly, full dates should be in the format 'YY-MM-DD' and anniversary dates should be in the format 'MM-DD'.

The text area

The text area allows you to optionally enter a large amount of text for a data item. Scroll-bars will automatically appear if the text exceeds the visible field area.

WARNING: do NOT use double-quotes in the text area.
